The Wood Brothers
Born from brothers Oliver and Chris Wood’s decision to reunite after separate careers in New York and Atlanta, The Wood Brothers fit squarely within the American roots tradition, blending folk, blues, country and touches of gospel. Raised in Boulder, Colorado, the two draw on a childhood steeped in folk, blues and jazz — extended for Chris by his work with the trio Medeski Martin & Wood and for Oliver by his involvement in Atlanta’s blues and roots scene, notably with King Johnson and as guitarist for Tinsley Ellis. Formed in the mid‑2000s, the group began as an acoustic duo before taking its current trio form with the addition of multi‑instrumentalist Jano Rix, which opened the door to a more rhythmic approach and denser arrangements. The Wood Brothers have developed a sound centered on vocal harmonies, Chris Wood’s upright bass, slide guitar and Oliver Wood’s songwriting, balancing spare ballads with groove‑driven tracks. Their debut album, Ways Not to Lose, was released in 2006 on Blue Note, followed by Loaded (2008), Smoke Ring Halo (2011), The Muse (2013), One Drop of Truth (2018) and Heart Is The Hero (2023), and the band has maintained a steady presence on folk, Americana and jam stages across the United States.
