The Brothers Comatose
Born around brothers Ben and Alex Morrison, The Brothers Comatose took shape in Northern California, between Petaluma, where the two musicians grew up, and San Francisco, where the band later established itself on the local scene. Now a quintet, The Brothers Comatose develops a bluegrass rooted in folk and Americana with a rock sensibility inherited from their early covers of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass and vocal harmonies form a direct, rhythmic sound anchored in the string-band tradition without being limited to the old‑time repertoire. After Songs from the Stoop (2010), the band released Respect the Van (2012), City Painted Gold (2016), Ink, Dust, and Luck (2018), Turning Up the Ground (2022) and Ear Snacks (2023). Their trajectory spans bluegrass circuits as well as larger festivals like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, High Sierra, Outside Lands and Kate Wolf, and tours alongside The Devil Makes Three, Yonder Mountain String Band and Lake Street Dive. The Brothers Comatose thus advances contemporary acoustic songwriting, driven by the group’s collective energy and the complementary playing of the Morrison brothers.
