TOKiMONSTA

Based in Los Angeles and born Jennifer Lee in Torrance, California, TOKiMONSTA has since the late 2000s been developing music at the crossroads of instrumental hip-hop, electronica, and the California beat scenes. Rooted in the West Coast underground culture, she trained through beat cyphers of Project Blowed and Low End Theory, a framework that permanently shaped her taste for off-kilter rhythms, supple textures, and fragmented melodies. The first woman signed to Brainfeeder, she released Midnight Menu in 2010 and then the Creature Dreams EP in 2011, before evolving her writing toward more open formats with Half Shadows in 2013, Desiderium in 2014, Fovere in 2016, Lune Rouge in 2017, and Oasis Nocturno in 2020. TOKiMONSTA moves between instrumental tracks, vocal productions, and remixes, with occasional collaborations with Anderson .Paak, Gavin Turek, Yuna, Selah Sue, EarthGang, or Isaiah Rashad. Her work maintains a balance between hip-hop groove, hushed bass music, electronic pop, and psychedelic atmospheres, without limiting itself to the club register. Alongside releases on Brainfeeder, Ultra and her label Young Art, TOKiMONSTA has established herself on international electronic stages with sets that extend this mobile, detailed aesthetic.
