The Irrepressibles

Behind The Irrepressibles is Jamie McDermott, a British musician and singer from Scarborough in North Yorkshire, who has been developing this project since 2002, between London, Berlin and Manchester. Initially conceived as a variable-geometry ensemble blending voice, strings and chamber instrumentation, The Irrepressibles has stood at the crossroads of chamber pop, orchestral pop, ambient, alternative rock and a more electronic writing that has emerged over the years. After the first EPs My Witness and Knife Song in 2005, followed by From the Circus to the Sea in 2009, Jamie McDermott released Mirror Mirror in 2010, followed by Nude in 2012, an album later expanded by the EPs Nude: Landscapes in 2013, Nude: Viscera in 2014 and Nude: Forbidden in 2014. The project then evolved toward a more direct form, without abandoning the lyrical arrangements and the dramatic tension of the singing, on Superheroes in 2020 and Yo Homo in 2024. The Irrepressibles also moves between pop stages, performance and collaborations, notably contributing to Röyksopp, Rex the Dog or Tinlicker projects. The track In This Shirt, released in 2010, has enjoyed lasting dissemination far beyond the band's initial audience, while The Irrepressibles continues to articulate orchestration, vocal intimacy and queer themes in a format that oscillates between a solo project and a live collective.
