Benga

Born in Clapton and associated with the Croydon scene in south London, Benga, whose real name is Adegbenga Adejumo, was part of the emergence of British dubstep in the early 2000s, following on from UK garage and London’s bass music. As a teenager he frequented the record shop Big Apple, where he met Skream and DJ Hatcha, and he released “Skank” early on in 2002, before putting out records on Big Apple, Hotflush and Planet Mu. His trajectory took shape with Newstep in 2006 and the albums Diary of an Afro Warrior (2008) and Chapter II (2013), which display a sound centred on heavy bass, clipped rhythms and a greater openness to vocal formats. Benga also developed a steady collaborative practice, notably with Skream and Coki, and as part of the trio Magnetic Man — formed with Skream and Artwork — which presented a more upfront, club-oriented take on the aesthetic. In parallel he produced for other artists, including Katy B on “Katy on a Mission” (2010), and from 2011 co-hosted a show on BBC Radio 1 with Skream. After a hiatus in the mid-2010s, Benga resumed his activities and released the single “Psychosis” in 2018.
