The Birthday Massacre

Born in the late 1990s in London, Ontario, the Canadian band The Birthday Massacre first formed under the name Imagica before adopting its current moniker in the early 2000s and embedding itself in Toronto’s alternative scene. Fronted by vocalist Chibi and a core of songwriters centered around Rainbow and Falcore, The Birthday Massacre craft a blend of electronic rock, synth-pop, and gothic rock, where overdriven guitars, 80s keyboards, and melodic vocals shape songs that oscillate between dark fairytale imagery, nostalgia, and goth culture. The debut album Nothing and Nowhere (2002) and its follow-up Violet (2004) laid the foundations of a sonic universe defined by contrasts between pop choruses and darker atmospheres, later extended by Walking with Strangers (2007) and Pins and Needles (2010), which established The Birthday Massacre on the North American and European touring circuits. With steady releases—including Hide and Seek (2012), Superstition (2014), Under Your Spell (2017), Diamonds (2020), and Fascination (2022)—The Birthday Massacre assert a consistent aesthetic of synthetic melodies, direct rock rhythms, and a visual imagination closely tied to the goth, darkwave, and alternative metal scenes.
