The Spill Canvas

Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, around the singer and songwriter Nick Thomas, The Spill Canvas began as a project heavily focused on personal writing before evolving into an alt-rock band with emo-pop and acoustic influences. After a debut EP, the name began to circulate with Sunsets & Car Crashes in 2004, recorded in a lineup still largely led by Thomas, followed by One Fell Swoop in 2005, a record that anchored The Spill Canvas more firmly in the American alternative scene of the 2000s. The band then went on tour, notably on the Warped Tour circuit, and refined a sound blending bright guitars, more energetic riffs, pop-rock melodies, and introspective lyrics. After signing with Sire Records, The Spill Canvas released Denial Feels So Good in 2007, followed by No Really, I’m Fine in the same year, with contributions from Anthony Green and Andrew McMahon. The discography that followed includes Formalities in 2010, Gestalt in 2012, the EP Hivemind in 2018 and Conduit in 2021. Despite several lineup changes and a hiatus at the start of the 2010s, The Spill Canvas continued its live activity, with Nick Thomas at the center of the project, alongside notably Landon Heil and, more recently, Evan Pharmakis.
