The Black Crowes

Formed in Marietta, Georgia, in the mid-1980s, The Black Crowes brought together brothers Chris Robinson on vocals and Rich Robinson on guitar around a rock sound steeped in blues, soul and Southern influences. Initially active as Mr. Crowe’s Garden, the band adopted the name The Black Crowes before releasing Shake Your Money Maker in 1990, an album driven by the singles “Hard to Handle” and “She Talks to Angels” that established them on the international rock scene. The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (1992) cemented an aesthetic combining 1970s-derived guitar riffs, a dense rhythm section and frequent use of keyboards and backing vocals. Their discography continued with Amorica in 1994 and several albums in the late 1990s and early 2000s, while The Black Crowes undertook long tours and a number of improvisational concerts, positioning themselves among rock bands known for their strong stage presence. Successive breaks and reunions punctuated their career, including an on-stage collaboration with Jimmy Page in the late 1990s and a return to the studio that resulted in Warpaint in 2008, followed by Happiness Bastards in 2024, which marks a new phase of activity for The Black Crowes.
