Signal

Born in Saint-Denis de La Réunion and based in Rotterdam, Jonathan Immanuel Kievit first developed the Signal project before pursuing his trajectory under the name IMANU. Under the alias Signal, he entered the Dutch drum and bass scene with an approach marked by neurofunk and a dense, precise and dark production, nourished also by his early listening to trance and progressive house. Signal emerged in the mid-2010s, spotted at a very young age by Noisia's circle, who supported him via Invisible Recordings. This period saw the release of several EPs, including Parallax in 2016, Mantura in 2017, then The Wall, Doom Desire, Solitude and Torment/2ME in 2018, on labels linked to drum and bass and bass music circuits. In parallel, Jonathan Kievit co-founded in 2018 the label Dividid with Abis and Lars Dingeman, in continuation of the Rotterdam electronic scene. From 2019, the name Signal gradually gives way to IMANU, a project with which Kievit broadens his spectrum toward a more hybrid electronic music, between drum and bass, breaks, techno, house and experimental textures. This evolution is reflected in the album Unfold, published in 2022. Signal's trajectory thus remains that of a first central artistic identity to understand the evolution of Jonathan Kievit within European electronic music.
