Basia Bulat

Born in Toronto in 1984 and raised in London, Ontario, in a family of Polish descent, Basia Bulat developed an early taste for folk music and intimate acoustic forms. After settling in Montreal, she became part of the North American indie folk scene, blending introspective writing, direct melodies, and arrangements where classic folk, pop, and touches of soul intersect. After studying at the University of Western Ontario, she began performing in small London venues, which led to her debut album Oh, My Darling in 2007, followed by Heart of My Own in 2010, cementing her footing between stripped-down ballads and more rhythmic tracks. With Tall Tall Shadow in 2013 and Good Advice in 2016, produced in collaboration with musician and producer Jim James, Bulat explored denser textures and a more upfront approach to pop songwriting while retaining a folk core. Are You in Love? in 2020 extended this focus on emotion and vocal arrangements, before The Garden in 2022 revisited part of her repertoire in a more orchestral aesthetic. Performing across Canada, Europe, and the United States, Basia Bulat alternates compact band shows with more solitary, voice- and songwriting-centered settings.
