Kathleen Edwards

Born in Ottawa in 1978, Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards stands at the crossroads of folk, rock, and alt-country, with writing that hinges on intimate narratives and portraits of everyday characters. After a self-released debut EP, Building 55 in 1999, Edwards drew notice with the album Failer, issued in 2002 in Canada and in 2003 internationally, which established her on the North American scene. She followed with Back to Me in 2005 and Asking for Flowers in 2008, developing a sound where electric guitars, country inflections, and slow ballads support finely detailed lyrics, often rooted in North American urban or rural landscapes. With Voyageur in 2012, co-produced notably with Justin Vernon, Edwards delved deeper into an introspective vein while broadening her palette toward a more expansive indie folk. After a break from touring and studio work—during which she devoted herself, among other things, to a café she opened near Ottawa—the artist returned to recording with Total Freedom in 2020, confirming a trajectory marked by alternations between retreat and comeback, concerts across North America and Europe, and a steady commitment to direct, melodic writing without unnecessary ornament.
