Steve Lawler
Born in Birmingham in 1973, Steve Lawler was shaped by the British rave culture of the early 1990s, initially organising his own parties before attracting attention in clubs. Early on in the Ibiza circuit, he secured regular dates at Café Mambo in the mid-1990s and later a residency linked to Cream, before establishing himself on stages such as Space Ibiza, The End in London and Twilo in New York. His approach blends house, tribal house, tech house and techno in a dark, physical register heavily focused on percussion, with sets constructed for duration and a gradual build of tension. On the production side, Steve Lawler released compilations including Dark Drums (2000), Nubreed 003 (2000), Lights Out (2002), Lights Out 2 (2003), Lights Out 3 (2005) and Viva (2006), which accompanied his move from a progressive house aesthetic to a drier, more tribal sound. He also launched the labels Harlem Records and later VIVa MUSiC, founded in 2006, which became the framework for numerous personal and collective projects, including the stage extension Viva Warriors in the 2010s.
