Safia Nolin
Born in Québec City and linked to the Limoilou neighborhood, Safia Nolin has since the mid-2010s developed a Francophone songwriting style where folk, slow pop, and stripped-down arrangements intersect, with a central emphasis on the voice, intimate lyrics, and a melancholy that is often direct. After a first EP Igloo / La Laideur in 2014, Safia Nolin released Limoilou in 2015, produced by Philippe Brault, which marks her emergence on the Quebec scene. She then broadens her path with Reprises Vol.1 in 2016, devoted to reinterpretations of the Francophone repertoire, followed by Dans le noir in 2018, where her acoustic universe opens to darker textures and an even tighter writing. Since then, Safia Nolin has alternated between personal albums and volumes of covers, with Reprises Vol.2 in 2019, Seum in 2021, built around two versions of each track, then Ufo Religion in 2024, recorded with Marc-André Labelle in a more organic approach. Her career also includes occasional collaborations, notably with Patrick Watson and Pomme, as well as a stage work that goes beyond the concert, such as the show Surveillée et punie presented in 2024. Between indie song, minimalist folk, and introspective pop, Safia Nolin occupies a unique place in contemporary Québecois music through the coherence of her tone and the measured evolution of her forms.
