Louis-Jean Cormier
Firmly rooted in Montreal’s music scene, Louis-Jean Cormier has, since the late 1990s, cultivated a songwriting voice that bridges Quebec chanson, independent rock, and folk-tinged pop. Born in Sept-Îles and later based in Montreal, he first rose to prominence as the singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter of Karkwa, with whom he released a string of studio albums—including 2010’s Les chemins de verre, winner of the Polaris Prize—and toured extensively across Quebec and the French-speaking world. Starting in 2012, Cormier pursued a parallel solo career, refining a more intimate palette driven by prominently French-language lyrics and meticulous arrangements, with the albums Le Treizième étage (2012), Les Grandes Artères (2015), Quand la nuit tombe (2020), and Le ciel est au plancher (2021). On stage, he performs both with an electric band and in more stripped-down configurations, striking a balance between rock energy and melodic finesse. In parallel with his own projects, Cormier also works as a producer, arranger, and co-writer for other francophone artists and contributes to various collective projects, maintaining a constant connection to the contemporary Quebec music scene.
