Primitive Man
Founded in the early 2010s in Denver, Colorado, Primitive Man belongs to an extreme scene that blends doom metal, sludge and death- and black-metal influences. The trio has developed a very slow, massive sound characterized by heavily distorted guitars, a weighty rhythm section, layers of noise and screamed or guttural vocals that reinforce an atmosphere of constant tension. With the 2013 album “Scorn” Primitive Man drew attention within the network of independent extreme-metal labels, followed by “Caustic” in 2017 and “Immersion” in 2020, which extended this abrasive aesthetic by incorporating more noise and ambient passages. Shorter releases like the EP “Home Is Where the Hatred Is” (2015) and several splits with other doom and black metal acts strengthened the band’s ties to an underground scene oriented toward intensive touring, small venues and specialized festivals. Primitive Man’s lyrics address social anger, disillusionment and intimate destruction in a direct, unadorned manner that is reflected in both the production and the stage attitude.
