Reverend Beat-Man
Active on Bern’s garage scene in Switzerland, Reverend Beat-Man is the stage name of musician Beat Zeller, who also appears in other projects such as The Monsters. Initially performing in the 1990s as Lightning Beat-Man, he developed with Reverend Beat-Man an artistic universe combining primitive rock’n’roll, trash blues, garage punk and imagery drawn from gospel and preaching. His approach is that of a one‑man band: a deep, foregrounded voice, heavily distorted guitar and minimal rhythmic backing, with lyrics that oscillate between dark humour, mystical visions and everyday observations. Alongside Reverend Beat-Man, he founded the independent label Voodoo Rhythm Records in the early 1990s, which became the main outlet for his releases and for many European garage and rockabilly acts. Reverend Beat-Man’s discography notably includes “Surreal Folk Blues Gospel Trash Vol. 1” and “Surreal Folk Blues Gospel Trash Vol. 2” (2007), and “Baile Bruja Muerto” (2018), recorded as a duo with musician Nicole Izobel Garcia, extending the stripped‑down lo‑fi aesthetic he champions on club, squat and festival stages across Europe and beyond.
