Primal Fear

Formed in 1997 around singer Ralf Scheepers and bassist Mat Sinner, Primal Fear has been part of the heavy and power metal scene in Germany’s Stuttgart region. The band developed a style defined by fast riffs, twin melodic guitars and a prominent high-register vocal, drawing on 1980s heavy metal with elements of speed metal and catchy choruses. From their debut Primal Fear (1998), followed by Jaws of Death (1999) and Nuclear Fire (2001), Primal Fear established an identity focused on themes of war, eschatology and dark spirituality. Black Sun (2002), Devil’s Ground (2004) and Seven Seals (2005) extended this aesthetic with darker atmospheres and mid-tempo arrangements, while New Religion (2007) and 16.6 (Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead) (2009) introduced more melodic passages and some more progressive structures. With Unbreakable (2012), Delivering the Black (2014), Rulebreaker (2016), Apocalypse (2018) and Metal Commando (2020), Primal Fear consolidated a formula alternating fast tracks, heavier songs and power ballads, marked by changes of guitarists but a core centered on Scheepers and Sinner. Active live across Europe, North America, Japan and South America, Primal Fear remains linked to the circuits of traditional metal and the international power metal scene.
