Pink Floyd

Formed in London in 1965 around Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason, Pink Floyd initially belonged to the British psychedelic scene before broadening their language to progressive rock, space rock and more experimental forms. The band’s early performances in London’s underground clubs accompanied the emergence of a songwriting approach marked by long structures, sonic textures and a close relationship between music, image and staging. After The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), the arrival of David Gilmour and Syd Barrett’s gradual withdrawal redefined the group’s balance, already audible on A Saucerful of Secrets (1968) and Meddle (1971). Throughout the 1970s, Pink Floyd developed a more conceptual approach with The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979), where atmospheric rock, narrative tension and social critique intersect. The subsequent period is marked by The Final Cut (1983), Roger Waters’ departure in 1985 and the continuation of Pink Floyd around David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright with A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987), The Division Bell (1994) and, later, The Endless River (2014).
