Pat Metheny

American guitarist and composer Pat Metheny was born in 1954 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and established himself on the jazz scene in the mid-1970s after joining Gary Burton’s quartet and releasing his first album as a leader, Bright Size Life (1976), with Jaco Pastorius and Bob Moses. Rooted in contemporary jazz but open to rock, folk and Latin American music, Metheny’s style combines developed melodies, shifting harmonies and a focus on sonic textures, positioned between jazz fusion, modern jazz and instrumental music. In 1977 he founded the Pat Metheny Group with pianist Lyle Mays, a long-standing ensemble exploring an aesthetic that blends large-form compositions, complex rhythms and a lyrical atmosphere, documented on albums such as Pat Metheny Group (1978), Offramp (1982), First Circle (1984), Still Life (Talking) (1987), Letter from Home (1989), Imaginary Day (1997) and The Way Up (2005). At the same time, Metheny has led numerous projects under his own name — from the studio-oriented Secret Story (1992) to experiments with an ensemble of automated instruments on Orchestrion (2010), as well as more intimate recordings like One Quiet Night (2003) and Dream Box (2023). His discography reflects a sustained interest in trio and small-group playing, collaborations with improvisers from diverse scenes (from Ornette Coleman to Brad Mehldau), and a regular concert presence, alternating group tours, smaller lineups and solo performances.
