Bill Frisell

Born in Baltimore in 1951 and raised in Denver, guitarist Bill Frisell is part of contemporary American jazz while maintaining a constant connection to folk, country and North American popular music. Trained at the University of Northern Colorado and later at the Berklee College of Music, Frisell moved to New York in the late 1970s, joined the ECM roster and gained recognition in the groups of Paul Motian and Jan Garbarek, before frequenting the downtown scene alongside John Zorn. His first album as a leader, “In Line” (1983), opened a prolific discography that includes “Rambler” (1985), “Have a Little Faith” (1992), “Nashville” (1997) and “Blues Dream” (2001), featuring reinterpretations of American repertoire, original compositions and film projects. Later based in Seattle, Frisell developed a variety of formats from trio to large ensemble and occasionally collaborated with artists such as Elvis Costello and Marianne Faithfull. His playing is characterized by a very clear guitar tone, the use of spacious harmonic textures, an attention to silence and a way of blending improvisation, simple melodies and orchestral atmospheres, as heard on more recent albums like “Guitar in the Space Age!” (2014), “Valentine” (2020) and “Four” (2022).
