Brad Mehldau

Born in 1970 in Jacksonville, Florida, pianist and composer Brad Mehldau emerged on the contemporary American jazz scene with an early focus on the piano trio (piano‑bass‑drums) and on solo piano. After studying in New York and a notable stint in Joshua Redman's quartet in the early 1990s, Mehldau gained attention with his first albums under his own name, notably "Introducing Brad Mehldau" (1995) and the "The Art of the Trio" series beginning in 1997. His trio—long formed by Larry Grenadier and Jorge Rossy, later joined by Jeff Ballard—mixes standards, original compositions and interpretations of recent rock and pop songs within a post‑bop jazz language that interweaves contrapuntal writing, melodic lyricism and a highly fragmented rhythmic approach. At the same time Mehldau has developed an extensive solo‑piano repertoire and released more orchestrated projects such as "Largo" (2002), "Highway Rider" (2010) and "Finding Gabriel" (2019), while collaborating with musicians like Pat Metheny, Chris Thile and drummer Mark Guiliana in the duo Mehliana. Firmly established on international stages, Mehldau alternates club dates, concert‑hall tours and thematic recordings—among them "After Bach" (2018), "Suite: April 2020" (2020) and "Your Mother Should Know: Brad Mehldau Plays The Beatles" (2023)—continuing his sustained dialogue between jazz, classical music and the Anglo‑Saxon popular repertoire.
