Oathbreaker

Formed in 2008 in Ghent, Belgium, Oathbreaker coalesced around Caro Tanghe, Lennart Bossu, Gilles Demolder and, in its early days, drummer Ivo Debrabandere, who was later replaced by Wim Coppers. Emerging from the Belgian hardcore scene and affiliated with the Church of Ra collective — which also includes Amenra — Oathbreaker initially developed a sound rooted in crust punk, hardcore and metalcore, before broadening its palette toward a dark post‑metal infused with elements of black metal, screamo, shoegaze and post‑rock. This evolution is evident across their discography, from the first EP Oathbreaker (2008) to Mælstrøm (2011), then Eros|Anteros (2013) and Rheia (2016), an album where the band pushed further the contrasts between abrasive detonations, atmospheric passages and vocals that mix piercing screams with more melodic lines. Oathbreaker toured Europe and the United States on the independent hardcore and metal circuit while maintaining ties with acts such as Amenra and Wiegedood; during the hiatus that began after 2017, members remained active in several projects, including Wiegedood and Predatory Void. Oathbreaker resumed activities from 2025.
