Nils Petter Molvær
Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær, born in 1960 on the island of Sula off Ålesund, emerged in the Oslo jazz scene in the 1980s as a member of the group Masqualero, a formation associated with the ECM label that firmly connected him to the European jazz network. After that group experience, Molvær gradually turned his work toward a fusion of jazz, ambient, rock and electronic influences, in which the trumpet assumes a central melodic role within carefully crafted sonic textures. His first album under his own name, Khmer (1997, ECM), established this aesthetic — blending rhythms inspired by electronic music, atmospheric layers and jazz improvisation — followed by Solid Ether (2000) and NP3 (2002), which deepened the intersection between live energy and studio production. Over the years Molvær has alternated between trio projects and larger ensembles, shaping his trumpet sound between restrained lyricism, saturation effects and repetitive motifs, and performing at both jazz festivals and in contexts closer to electronic music. Collaborations with musicians such as guitarist Eivind Aarset, bassist-producer Bill Laswell and the Jamaican duo Sly & Robbie, with whom he recorded Nordub in 2018, confirm an approach that crosses jazz, dub and experimental scenes and remains at the core of Molvær’s trajectory.
