Magnus Öström

Born in 1965 in Sweden, Magnus Öström trained very early alongside Esbjörn Svensson, with whom he played since childhood before pursuing musical studies in Stockholm. A drummer and composer, Öström develops a language that sits at the crossroads of contemporary jazz, rock and jazz fusion, with particular attention to dynamics, repeating motifs and percussion colors. His career remains closely tied to e.s.t., the Esbjörn Svensson Trio founded with Svensson and Dan Berglund in the early 1990s, a formation that marked the European scene with an approach to the jazz trio open to the tensions of rock, to pulsations close to electronic music and to a highly structured melodic writing. After the band's end in 2008, Öström began releasing work under his own name, notably Thread of Life (2011), Searching for Jupiter (2013) and Parachute (2016). In these projects, often conceived with a collective of musicians rather than merely a drum showcase, Öström extends a modern jazz aesthetic where improvisation dialogues with more atmospheric textures and a clear sense of construction, both on stage and in the studio.
