Bugge Wesseltoft
Norwegian pianist and composer born in 1964 in Porsgrunn, Bugge Wesseltoft emerged from the late 1980s on Oslo’s jazz scene before developing a personal project at the crossroads of acoustic jazz, electronic music and ambient. After early work with musicians such as Sidsel Endresen and Jan Garbarek, Wesseltoft founded the label Jazzland Recordings in 1996 and launched the New Conception of Jazz series; its first album was released that year and established a language blending improvisation, club-inspired rhythms and pared-down electronic textures. The solo piano record It’s Snowing on My Piano (1997) revealed a more intimate side focused on renditions of Christmas songs and slow, melodic compositions. Across his albums—including Sharing (1998), Moving (2001), Film ing (2004) and Ok World (2013)—Wesseltoft alternates between electronic formations, expanded acoustic ensembles and solo formats. He continues to explore the intersection of European jazz and electronic culture through various collaborations, notably with Henrik Schwarz and as part of the trio Rymden with Dan Berglund and Magnus Öström, and performs regularly on club and festival stages in Norway and internationally.
