Nick Warren
Born in Bristol, Nick Warren belongs to the generation of British DJs who accompanied the rise of progressive house in the 1990s. After starting out in clubs in the southwest of England, he moved onto the national circuit and became one of the resident DJs at Cream in Liverpool — an important platform in his transition to an international scene. Nick Warren established a DJ identity built on progression, melodic textures and a balance between house, breakbeat, trance and more downtempo passages, with a fluid approach to club storytelling. At the same time, he formed the duo Way Out West with Jody Wisternoff, an electronic project from Bristol whose albums Way Out West (1997), Intensify (2001), Don’t Look Now (2004), We Love Machine (2009) and Tuesday Maybe (2017) developed a more atmospheric writing style, combining sung choruses, progressive rhythms and polished production. His mixes for the Global Underground series from the late 1990s extended that visibility and documented his ties to house and progressive scenes in several cities, while his more recent sets often favour deeper, more organic and nuanced forms.
