MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS

Formed in Kobe in 2002, MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS belongs to a strand of Japanese rock that blends post-hardcore, alternative rock, shoegaze and touches of math rock. The band initially coalesced around a female trio, with Natsuko Miyamoto on bass and vocals, before several personnel changes altered its trajectory without erasing its sonic identity. From its earliest recordings, MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS develops a dense and taut style, based on sharp guitars, rhythmic ruptures and melodic vocal lines, oscillating between noise urgency and pop clarity. After the mini-album MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS in 2008, the band released World Is Yours in 2009 and then ゼロコンマ、色とりどりの世界 in 2010, a period during which they toured the Japanese indie scene and collaborated in the studio with Dave Fridmann on several tracks at the moment of its emergence. Weakened by departures, MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS ceased activity in 2012 before reforming in 2015 around Natsuko Miyamoto. This new phase gave rise to new concerts in Japan and internationally, followed by No New World in 2018, Naked Album in 2020 and Awakening: Sleeping in 2022. In this more recent configuration, MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS extends its balance between abrasive tension, saturated textures and direct writing.
