Loscil
Under the name Loscil, Scott Morgan has been developing a minimalist electronic ambient music in Vancouver, characterized by slow, unfolding soundscapes, muted pulses and a strong sense of space. The project began in 1998 within the multimedia collective Multiplex, which at the time staged audiovisual events at the underground cinema The Blinding Light. Trained at Simon Fraser University with Barry Truax, Morgan runs Loscil alongside a more rock‑oriented career as the drummer for Destroyer. After self‑releasing A New Demonstration of Thermodynamic Tendencies in 1999, Loscil joined the Kranky label, which issued Triple Point (2001), Submers (2002), First Narrows (2004) and Plume (2006) — an initial sequence in which his ambient techno gradually opened to more organic instrumental interventions. Subsequent releases, from Endless Falls (2010) to Sea Island (2014), Monument Builders (2016), Equivalents (2019), Clara (2021) and Colours of Air (2023) with Lawrence English, reveal an increasingly concentrated compositional approach often linked to landscapes, architecture or sound‑transformation setups. Loscil has also pursued various side projects and collaborated with Lawrence English, bvdub, Rachel Grimes, Sarah Neufeld and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
