John Butler
Between the California of his childhood and Western Australia, where he settled as a teenager, John Butler developed a career tied to acoustic guitar, folk and roots music. Based in Fremantle, he began busking in the mid-1990s, self-released the cassette Searching for Heritage in 1996 and a self-titled debut album in 1998. That same year the John Butler Trio was formed — a fluid lineup centered on Butler that blends folk, blues, rock with funk and reggae accents, marked by a preference for open tunings, extended instrumental pieces and an energy reminiscent of a jam band. With the John Butler Trio he released several studio albums, including Three (2001), Sunrise Over Sea (2004), Grand National (2007), April Uprising (2010), Flesh & Blood (2014) and Home (2018), which established the project on club and festival stages in Australia and internationally. Over the years Butler has alternated solo work, touring with the trio and occasional collaborations with musicians from the folk and roots scene, while maintaining guitar-centered songwriting, lyrics that are often socially aware or intimate, and a concert approach that frequently favours improvisation.
