Anthony Hamilton
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Anthony Hamilton belongs to an American soul tradition shaped by R&B, gospel and touches of southern soul. After singing in church as a youth, he began his recording career in the 1990s with XTC in 1996 and gained wider recognition in the early 2000s through his appearance on Nappy Roots’ “Po’ Folks” and the album Comin’ from Where I’m From in 2003. His deep, gritty voice, flexible phrasing and songwriting focused on relationships, faith and everyday experience give his tracks a direct tone, sitting between soul ballads, contemporary R&B and the heritage of classic rhythm and blues. He followed with Ain’t Nobody Worryin’ (2005), The Point of It All (2008), Back to Love (2011), Home for the Holidays (2014), What I’m Feelin’ (2016) and Love Is the New Black (2021). Over the course of his career Hamilton has moved between soul, hip-hop and R&B scenes, collaborating with artists from those worlds while maintaining an aesthetic rooted in the African American vocal tradition.
