Jennifer Hudson
Emerging from Chicago’s gospel scene in the United States, Jennifer Hudson rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a contestant on the third season of American Idol, which opened doors for her in both music and film. After her screen debut in Dreamgirls in 2006 — a performance that earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress — she launched her recording career with the album Jennifer Hudson in 2008, a contemporary R&B set steeped in soul and gospel, followed by 2011’s I Remember Me, featuring a more pop-leaning sound and voice-centered ballads. In 2014, the album JHUD explored a more up-tempo side, with dance- and hip-hop-oriented production while retaining a soul foundation. Alongside her albums, Hudson has developed a career as an actress and singer for both stage and screen, notably on Broadway in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple and in the 2021 film Respect centered on Aretha Franklin. With a repertoire that spans R&B ballads, mid-tempo cuts, and more pop-oriented tracks, Hudson bridges classic gospel heritage and contemporary American urban music, and is among the few artists to have achieved an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, and a Tony.
