L7
Formed in Los Angeles in 1985 around guitarist-vocalists Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner, L7 soon brought in bassist Jennifer Finch and drummer Demetra “Dee” Plakas, asserting its identity as an all-female rock quartet. Rooted in the American alternative scene, L7 blends punk, hard rock, and grunge, with a massive sound, streamlined structures, and direct songwriting that weaves together dark humor, social commentary, and feminist perspectives. After a self-titled debut in 1988, the band moved closer to the Sub Pop orbit with Smell the Magic in 1990 and spent the early 1990s touring extensively across North America’s alternative circuits. Bricks Are Heavy (1992) and Hungry for Stink (1994) firmly positioned L7 at the crossroads of grunge and punk, followed by The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum (1997) and Slap-Happy (1999), which explored heavier and more melodic shades. In parallel, L7, together with the organization Rock for Choice, launched a series of concerts supporting abortion rights in the United States, further rooting the band in activist networks. After going dormant in the early 2000s, L7 reunited in 2014 to resume international touring and released Scatter the Rats in 2019, extending an aesthetic true to its punk and grunge foundations while reaching new generations of listeners.
