Mudhoney
Formed in Seattle in 1988 in the wake of Green River, Mudhoney brings together Mark Arm, Steve Turner, Dan Peters and, since the early 2000s, Guy Maddison. The band sits at the crossroads of the nascent grunge, garage punk, punk rock, and alternative rock, with an abrasive sound, saturated guitars, a direct playing style and a marked taste for twisted melodies as much as for irony. The first records released on Sub Pop, particularly the single “Touch Me I’m Sick” and the EP Superfuzz Bigmuff in 1988, established Mudhoney’s aesthetic early in the Seattle scene, before the Mudhoney album in 1989 and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge in 1991. After a stint at Reprise in the 1990s, notably Piece of Cake in 1992, My Brother the Cow in 1995 and Tomorrow Hit Today in 1998, Mudhoney returned to Sub Pop and continued a steady path between tours and new recordings. The band then kept a writing style that blends punk energy, heavy riffs, dirty garage rock and more melodic or blues-rock detours depending on the period. From Since We’ve Become Translucent in 2002 to Plastic Eternity in 2023, Mudhoney continues to evolve without breaking from the Seattle-born sonic core, on American and European independent stages.
