In Her Own Words

Based in Los Angeles, the American band In Her Own Words is part of the 2010s pop-punk and emo-pop scene, with a marked taste for melodic hooks and sharp guitars. Formed at the start of the decade, In Her Own Words first developed within a strongly DIY framework, moving from early EPs and small clubs to tours alongside other pop-punk and post-hardcore acts, before gradually structuring its activity around more assertive songwriting. The band then honed a style centered on highly melodic vocals, often brisk tempos, and introspective lyrics that address relationships, anxiety, and low points—somewhere between modern pop punk and alternative rock. A first turning point came with the 2016 album Unfamiliar, which put In Her Own Words on North American and European touring circuits. Steady Glow, released in 2019, deepened that direction by blending more elaborate structures with quieter passages while retaining an accessible pop-punk foundation. With 2022’s Distance or Decay, In Her Own Words continued this evolution by leaning further into contrasts between high-energy pace, prominently featured vocal melodies, and more pronounced emo touches, cementing a lasting place within the new international wave of pop punk.
