Joker

Based in Bristol, Joker has been developing since the late 2000s an approach to British dubstep situated between grime, bass music and melodic electronic, characterized by very colorful synths, massive bass and jolting rhythms. Associated with the so‑called “purple” aesthetic, Joker emerged in Bristol's club scene alongside producers such as Guido and Gemmy, before releasing part of his music through Kapsize and appearing on several labels linked to the dubstep of that period. With The Vision (2011), released on 4AD, Joker broadened his format toward more vocal tracks, where the imprint of rap and R&B becomes clearer, without abandoning the sonic density or the weight of the bass that structure his productions. Throughout his trajectory, Joker alternates solo releases, occasional collaborations with MCs and singers, and a regular presence on dubstep, grime and bass stages in clubs and at festivals. Joker’s music remains marked by a balance between the physical impact of the sound system, a strong melodic sense and a highly synthetic treatment of textures.
