Iron & Wine

Behind the name Iron & Wine is American singer-songwriter Sam Beam, born in South Carolina and coming to prominence in the early 2000s while living in Miami. Working in a folk and indie-folk vein, Iron & Wine blends intimate ballads, Americana influences, and understated touches of rock and gospel. His earliest songs, recorded in a highly stripped-down fashion, appeared on the album The Creek Drank the Cradle in 2002, followed by Our Endless Numbered Days in 2004, which paved the way for more structured writing and a growing presence on the North American indie scene. With The Shepherd’s Dog in 2007 and then Kiss Each Other Clean in 2011, Iron & Wine broadened the instrumentation and explored denser arrangements, while retaining his gentle vocals and a melodic focus on guitar and vocal harmonies. The subsequent discography—most notably Ghost on Ghost in 2013, Beast Epic in 2017, and Light Verse in 2024—shows a back-and-forth between acoustic folk, more soul- or jazz-tinged tones, and song-oriented forms. In parallel, Iron & Wine has engaged in numerous collaborations, notably with Calexico, Ben Bridwell, and Jesca Hoop, and performs both solo and with a band, in a realm where storytelling and intimacy with the listener remain central to his artistic vision.
