Dumas

Active on the Quebec music scene since the late 1990s, Dumas—born Steve Dumas—is a singer-songwriter from Victoriaville now based in Montreal, whose work lies in francophone pop tinged with rock and electronic elements. After starting out in a band, he made a name for himself as a solo artist with the album Dumas in 2001, then Le cours des jours in 2003, where a blend of direct melodies, intimate lyrics, and finely crafted arrangements came into focus. He then honed a more detailed writing style on Fixer le temps (2006) and continued his explorations with Traces (2008) and L’heure et l’endroit (2012), while playing numerous shows at venues and festivals across Quebec. Dumas’s output alternates between guitar-driven electric songs, more stripped-down ballads, and synthetic atmospheres—a trajectory he carried forward on Abri de fortune (pour fin du monde) in 2014, Nos idéaux in 2019, and Cosmologie in 2021. In parallel with his albums, Dumas also composes for film and television, nurturing a more instrumental and narrative side to his work, in keeping with his long-term practice as a songwriter.
