Duke Special
Born Peter Wilson in Lisburn, Northern Ireland in 1971 and based in Belfast, Duke Special has developed since the early 2000s a piano-centred songwriting style at the crossroads of baroque pop, chamber pop, folk, alternative rock and soul. After spells in the bands Booley and Benzine Headset he adopted the stage name Duke Special for his solo career in 2002, initially releasing the EPs Lucky Me and My Villain Heart, which were compiled on Adventures in Gramophone in 2005. Duke Special’s music pairs singer‑songwriter melodies with arrangements that evoke cabaret and music‑hall, often delivered on stage with a theatrical presentation. His career alternates between song albums and projects connected to other forms, from Songs from the Deep Forest (2006) and I Never Thought This Day Would Come (2008) to Mother Courage and Her Children (2010), The Silent World of Hector Mann (2010) and Under the Dark Cloth (2011), the latter recorded with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. He has also composed for theatre and television, collaborated with Clannad, and continued his discography with Oh Pioneer (2012), Look Out Machines! (2015), Hallow (2017) and Blood for Ghosts (2023), the last conceived from scores found in the archives of the Princess Grace Irish Library.
