General Elektriks

Launched in the early 2000s by Hervé Salters, a French musician who had spent time in Paris before moving to San Francisco in 1999, General Elektriks develops a project at the crossroads of electropop, funk, soul, rock, and jazz. A keyboardist who previously played alongside Femi Kuti, Matthieu Chedid, or DJ Mehdi, Salters built the first General Elektriks tracks within the California scene and drew closer to the Quannum Projects collective, with contributions from Lateef the Truthspeaker and Chief Xcel around the first album Cliquety Kliqk in 2003. General Elektriks' music rests on prominent keyboards, flexible grooves, a vocal that is often slightly off-kilter, and writing that blends pop refrains, retro textures, and funk energy. After Good City for Dreamers in 2009 and Parker Street in 2011, the project also took on a more established live dimension, notably with Jessie Chaton who has accompanied General Elektriks on tour from that period. The discography was later enriched by To Be a Stranger in 2016, Carry No Ghosts in 2018 and Party Like A Human in 2021, conceived in Berlin, confirming a formula where American and European influences intersect in a format that is both danceable, melodic, and readily tinted with psychedelic soul.
