Alton Miller
Born in 1966 in Detroit, Alton Miller became part of Detroit house history by the late 1980s. Trained between his hometown and Chicago—where he attended Frankie Knuckles’ parties and Ron Hardy’s Music Box—he co-founded the Music Institute in 1988 with Chez Damier and George Baker. After a spell in Toronto, he returned to Detroit in 1991, began producing for KMS, Kevin Saunderson’s label, and was also involved with the Transmat scene. His music sits between deep house and Detroit house with strong soul, funk and jazz influences, characterized by relaxed rhythms, warm rounded basslines and a taste for rich, warm atmospheres. Based in Paris from 1996 to 1998 and in South Africa in 2011 before returning to Detroit, Miller has built a career tied to American and European club scenes. His discography includes the albums Rhythm Exposed (2000), Stories From Bohemia (2003), Souls Like Mine (2007) and Light Years Away (2010). He has also released on labels such as Peacefrog, Mahogani Music, Moods & Grooves and InnerMuse Recordings, relaunched in 2015, and issued the EP Reflections Within in 2024.
