Jovonn

Based in New York and originally from Brooklyn, Jovonn, real name Allen Jovonn Armstrong, has since the early 1990s developed a career anchored in American deep house, with a sound nourished by soul, funk, garage house and a distinctly marked New York club culture. Initially active as a hip-hop DJ in adolescence on block parties and in clubs, he turned to house at the end of the 1980s, then quickly launched his own labels, notably Goldtone Records, before running other labels such as Body ’N Deep and Next Moov. Jovonn largely built his career outside the mainstream circuits, favoring a steady output of maxis and EPs where round bass lines, smooth grooves, warm keyboards and a direct sense for the dancefloor recur. His discography includes the albums Spirit (2002), Blaque House (2009) and Timeless (2018), as well as the compilation Goldtones (2014), devoted to his early productions. Over the years, Jovonn has also collaborated with artists such as DJ Deep, Stephanie Cooke or Kenny Bobien, while remaining associated with an independent house scene spanning New York, Europe and the specialized circuits of DJing.
