Desperate Journalist
Born in London in 2012, Desperate Journalist brings together Jo Bevan on vocals, Rob Hardy on guitar, Simon Drowner on bass, and Caroline Helbert on drums in a lineup that sits at the crossroads of post-punk revival, indie rock, and a dark pop with clear melodic lines. The band formed around musicians from projects in the British indie scene, notably The Drowners and If..., and first drew attention with the Cristina EP in 2013 before joining Fierce Panda Records. Desperate Journalist then developed a taut and direct sound, carried by bright, incisive guitars, a restrained rhythm section, and songs where melodic drive remains central. Its debut album, Desperate Journalist, appeared in 2015, followed by Grow Up in 2017, In Search of the Miraculous in 2019, Maximum Sorrow! in 2021, and No Hero in 2024. Over the years, Desperate Journalist has toured clubs, festivals and venues across the United Kingdom and Europe, with appearances at Indietracks, Wave-Gotik-Treffen or Benicàssim, as well as performing alongside Chameleons Vox, Marion, or Slow Readers Club. Not breaking with its post-punk roots, Desperate Journalist gradually broadened its writing toward more open and nuanced songs, while maintaining the cold, melodic tension that underpins its identity.
