Example

Born in Hammersmith, west London, Elliot John Gleave, known as Example, has since the mid-2000s developed a repertoire at the intersection of British rap, hip house and electronic pop aimed at the club, where spoken verses alternate with sung choruses over productions that draw on eurodance and EDM. After early singles released independently on his own imprint All The Chats and later via the label The Beats, Example issued What We Made in 2007 and shifted format with Won’t Go Quietly in 2010, an album that firmly placed him in a more dance-oriented register. That direction continued on Playing in the Shadows (2011) and The Evolution of Man (2012), featuring collaborations tied to the British electronic scene, notably Sub Focus and Nero. Present both on festival stages and in club circuits, Example evolved his writing from a biting, very British rap toward a more direct formula while retaining his hip-hop roots. He also appears alongside the Pet Shop Boys on Thursday (2013). After Live Life Living (2014), Example released Bangers & Ballads in 2018, Some Nights Last for Days in 2020 — a project more centered on rap — and We May Grow Old But We Never Grow Up in 2022.
