EMF
Formed in 1989 in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, EMF initially sat at the intersection of alternative rock, indie rock and late-1980s British dance culture, with a sound built on nervous guitars, keyboards, danceable rhythms and the use of samples. EMF quickly attracted attention in the early 1990s with the single “Unbelievable” and the album Schubert Dip in 1991, followed by Stigma in 1992 and Cha Cha Cha in 1995. The band’s trajectory later alternated between splits and reunions, notably marked by the death of bassist Zac Foley in 2002, while several members pursued side projects. Onstage, EMF moved between the indie circuit and larger bills, touring and reforming regularly from the 2000s. The current core comprises James Atkin, Ian Dench, Derry Brownson, Stevey Marsh and Robin Goodridge. After a long recording hiatus, EMF returned with Go Go Sapiens in 2022 and The Beauty and the Chaos in 2024, extending a formula in which pop choruses, rock energy and electronic pulse remain tightly linked.
