Jesus Jones
Formed in the late 1980s in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, Jesus Jones initially emerged from the British grebo and alternative dance scene with a sound that blended alternative rock, indie energy, danceable rhythms and electronic textures. Around Mike Edwards, the band quickly developed songwriting marked by topical themes, media culture and a direct pop sensibility. Jesus Jones debuted with the album Liquidizer in 1989 and broadened their audience with Doubt in 1991, which included “Right Here, Right Now”, “Real Real Real” and “International Bright Young Thing”. That second record, read as a very contemporary reflection on the end of the Cold War, put Jesus Jones on a more international footing and earned them a Grammy nomination for “Right Here, Right Now”. In 1993 Perverse shifted the formula toward a darker, more industrial and more digital register without abandoning melodic effectiveness. Subsequent releases include Already (1997), London (2001) and the albums Passages and Voyages in 2018. Although their output became more sporadic from the 2000s onward, Jesus Jones continued to perform live in the UK and internationally, retaining an identity positioned between rock, electronic pop and alternative culture.
