The B-52's
Formed in 1976 in Athens, Georgia (US), The B-52's emerged at the crossroads of new wave, dance rock and 1950s–60s‑inspired pop. The band, originally Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson, Ricky Wilson and Keith Strickland, made a name for itself in the late 1970s on the American underground scene, from local clubs to New York venues. The single “Rock Lobster” (1978) and the album “The B-52’s” (1979) established a style built on nervy rhythms, surf guitars, bright keyboards and vocal work alternating spoken delivery, harmonies and syncopated yelps. The B-52's continued with “Wild Planet” (1980), “Whammy!” (1983) and “Bouncing Off the Satellites” (1986), an album marked by Ricky Wilson’s death, before refocusing their songwriting toward a more pop and groove‑oriented register with “Cosmic Thing” in 1989, produced in part by Nile Rodgers and Don Was. Reduced to a quartet after Keith Strickland moved to guitar, The B-52's followed with “Good Stuff” (1992) and “Funplex” (2008), while maintaining a steady touring presence. The band’s universe rests on a blend of retro references, offbeat humour and dance‑friendly formats that run throughout their discography.
