John Illsley

Born in Leicester, England in 1949, John Illsley established himself on the bass in the late 1970s British rock scene as a founding member of Dire Straits, a group he formed with Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler and Pick Withers. Present throughout the band's history until its dissolution in 1995, John Illsley contributed to the development of a sound blending rock, blues rock and a sober writing style, with a steady, unobtrusive bass, at the service of the guitars and the overall dynamics. In parallel with his Dire Straits career, Illsley pursued a solo path from the 1980s with Never Told a Soul in 1984 and then Glass in 1988. After the band's end, he returned to more personal work marked by singer‑songwriter rock with folk, blues and sometimes Celtic tinges, notably through contact with the Irish group Cunla and songwriter Greg Pearle, with whom he published Beautiful You in 2008. His discography continues with Streets of Heaven in 2010, Testing the Water in 2014, Long Shadows in 2016, Coming Up for Air in 2019 and VIII in 2022. John Illsley has since performed on stage under his own name, in a format centered on his compositions, his rock heritage and a straightforward approach to songwriting.
