LEENALCHI

Formed in Seoul in 2019, LEENALCHI develops an approach that fuses Korean pansori and alternative pop with an atypical lineup centered on several singers, two basses and a drum kit. The project emerged around composer and bassist Jang Young-gyu following the Dragon King show, which was already revisiting Sugungga, one of the major cycles of pansori. LEENALCHI translates these narratives into a dry, repetitive and danceable rhythmic frame, where voices respond to each other in chorus or relay, without aiming for traditional reconstruction. The group first drew attention on club stages in Seoul before reaching a much wider audience in 2020 with Beomnaeryonda, a track from its first album Sugungga, released in 2020, then completed in 2021 by a CD edition enriched with additional tracks. Since then, LEENALCHI has toured in South Korea and internationally, while the lineup has evolved, conceived as a more flexible collective structure than a fixed group. This circulation of members accompanies music based on the dialogue between traditional vocal phrasing, bass grooves, percussive tension and contemporary live formats.
