Chudahye Chagis
Around South Korean singer Chu Dahye, Chudahye Chagis develops from South Korea a musical form at the crossroads of Korean ritual repertoires and contemporary music. The project is built on Chu Dahye’s practice as a sorikkun, a performer rooted in traditional Korean singing, and draws in particular on the muga, shamanic chants associated with the provinces of Pyeong’an, Jeju and Hwanghae. As a quartet with Simun on guitar, Kim Jae-ho on bass and Kim Da-vin on drums, Chudahye Chagis articulates these ancient materials with structures borrowed from funk, reggae, jazz, hip‑hop, rock and a strongly rhythmic psychedelia. The result relies as much on the tension of the voice as on a flexible collective interplay, where repetitive motifs, danceable pulses and dynamic shifts remain central. Chudahye Chagis has attracted attention on the Korean independent scene for this transversal approach between oral tradition and group composition, and the track “Minjoongui norae” won the Best R&B/Soul Song award at the Korean Music Awards 2021. The name Chudahye Chagis also evokes an idea of sharing, consistent with music conceived as a collective space rather than a mere fusion of styles.
