Mutya Buena

Born in Kingsbury, in the northwest of London, Mutya Buena rose to prominence at a very young age in the British pop scene as a member of the original Sugababes trio, formed in the late 1990s with Keisha Buchanan and Siobhán Donaghy. Her deep, flexible voice spans a repertoire ranging from pop to R&B and soul, delivered with a direct singing style that remains identifiable across the different phases of her career. With the Sugababes, Mutya Buena contributed to the albums One Touch (2000), Angels with Dirty Faces (2002), Three (2003), and Taller in More Ways (2005), before leaving the group in the same year. She then embarked on a solo path highlighted by Real Girl (2007), an album where urban pop, soul and dance intersect, as well as several collaborations, notably with George Michael on This Is Not Real Love (2006) and Groove Armada on Song 4 Mutya (Out of Control) (2007). After this period, Mutya Buena continued to record more sporadically, between features, independent singles and appearances on stages linked to pop, club and UK garage. In 2011, she reunited with Siobhán Donaghy and Keisha Buchanan in the project Mutya Keisha Siobhan, which released the single Flatline in 2013, before the trio officially reclaimed the Sugababes name in 2019. Since then, Mutya Buena has split her activity between this collective return and more recent collaborations, in a register that remains rooted in the meeting of contemporary pop, R&B and British dance music.
